Lloret de Mar is a former fishing village. Its origin dates from 2nd and 3rd century BC. Lloret preserves monumental remains of great value: the Iberian village of Montbarbat and the Roman Tombs, the 16th century Church (with Catalan paintings of that period), Our Lady of "Alegrías" Church, the Benedictine chapel of "St. Pere del Bosc", Sta. Cristina and St. Quirze Churches, and St. Joan’s Castle (10-11th century AD), situated on the hill which separates Fanals beach from Lloret's beach.
